Our Mission:
The Event's mission is to bring the community and local businesses together with the goal of raising money and awareness for a local non-profit organization.
How did we come to be?

Early in 2007 three people, Burt Beebe, his wife Anne, and Todd McClelland, owner of Classic Café located in Southport, New York, sat around the food counter at Classic Café brain-storming on ways to have some sort of food competition in the Elmira-Corning area that could involve the community, especially children and families.  Besides bringing the community together it was important that the event benefitted a local non-profit organization.

At first, the thought was to have something like the “Iron Chef” competition like the show on the Food Channel. But then one day in February of 2008 Burt and Anne sat down at Classic’s counter for dinner, and Todd sat down next to them.  “How about we do a gingerbread house competition,” he said, excitedly.  The moment those words rolled off his tongue, the idea was sold. The logistics of this type of competition were far easier than that of an Iron Chef Competition and a concept that 3 people could pull together.

The next step was to put a plan together that could be sold to businesses for sponsorships. The first year, 2008, was well worth the work! There were 33 gingerbread houses and 83 entrants.

The event, originally called the Gingerbread House Competition of the Twin Tiers, was changed to the Gingerbread House Competition of New York State shortly after the first event, with the intent of bringing more people from around the whole Northeast to the area to support the non-profit organization chosen for that year and to help increase tourism in the area.

Though there have been changes and some tweaking here and there, the purpose has not changed: to bring the community together, children, adults and businesses alike, for an event that is both fun and has purpose, to help a non-profit organization.
